People often don’t realise how related physical and mental health are to each other. Exercise has been shown to assist in the management of mental health issues. When someone is struggling emotionally or suffering significant stress or illness, it often also impacts how much exercise they do. This then impacts their mental health and general health.
Here, at Sydney Advanced Physiotherapy we recognise the relationship between exercise and mental health, and your emotional well being and pain. It is not uncommon to see a very direct physical link between the way people are feeling and their pain and function.
Strategies for mental health that we may recommend as part of your treatment include the following:
- Meditation: Apps such as Headspace, Smiling Mind ad 1 Giant Mind are great options
- Breathing strategies: our physiotherapists can teach you how to breathe properly which can have a significant effect on your pain levels and your nervous system. Breathing exercises can also be used to help you relax.
- Exercise: Your physio can help create an exercise program to help you recover from pain or injury, or to help you exercise safely.
